  • 1. Have you ever been to any music festivals? How was it? If not, would you like to go to one?

  • Luke: Hey, Sarah! I'm planning to go to Burning Man. Would you like to join me? 

    Sarah: I've heard the name, but I'm not quite sure what it is. ___________________? 

    Luke: Burning Man is this incredible event held every year in the Nevada desert. It's a temporary city built by the ______________ for a week filled with massive art installations, sculptures, music stages, performances, and countless people dressed up in amazing costumes.

    Sarah: Wow, a week in the desert! What about the atmosphere there? 

    Luke: It's incredible! People from all over the _________________, expressing themselves freely through art, costumes, and performances. It's a celebration of creativity and self-expression. 

    Sarah: That sounds inspiring! Is it expensive? How much money does it cost? 

    Luke: At Burning Man, people don't use money. Instead you __________ things, skills, or performances for the things you might need. Last time I went, I traded some food for a yoga class, or I traded ____________ for some fresh fruit.

    Luke: It's not common, but you should be prepared for anything ______________ like dust or rain storms, flooding, and definitely some hot weather.

  • Atmosphere: The overall feeling or mood of a place or situation; the prevailing emotional tone or ambiance.

    Self-expression: The act of expressing one's thoughts, feelings, or identity in a creative or individualistic way.

    Harsh: Severe or difficult conditions that are demanding, unpleasant, or challenging.

    Workshops: Sessions or classes where practical skills, knowledge, or techniques are taught or developed in a specific area or subject.

    Survivalist experience: An adventure or situation where individuals need to rely on their self-sufficiency and resourcefulness to endure challenging or extreme conditions for an extended period.

  • Step 1: Introduce the topic of alternative festivals. Talk about how people are inventing new festivals. Introduce terms like, creativity, hippie culture, costumes, etc.

    Step 2: Have the students discuss the warm-questions and ask for some answers after they are done to create conversations.

    Step 3: Play the recording and have the students listen and fill in the gaps with the missing words. 

    Step 4: Have the students complete the vocabulary worksheet before the reading or after the reading. This will depend on teacher preferences.  

    Step 5: Let the students discuss the discussion questions and elicit answers from them after they are done. You should get them to use the vocabulary in their discussions.
