  • 1. Describe your hometown. What makes it unique from other cities or towns? How has it changed over the years?

    2. What are the most important things to you when choosing to live in a town or city?

  • Sophia: Hey Mark! I heard you moved from the city to a town. How's the change been for you? 

    Mark: Hey Sophia! Yes, it's been quite an ___________. Living in the town is a whole different experience compared to the city. 

    Sophia: What are the main differences you've noticed between living in the city and the town? 

    Mark: Well, in the city, everything is fast-paced. There are lots of people, and _________________. But in the town, it's much quieter and less crowded. The pace of life is slower. 

    Sophia: I can imagine. What about _____________ and ____________? 

    Mark: In the city, there are numerous shops, restaurants, and entertainment options within walking distance. However, in the town, while it's more peaceful, amenities are a bit limited. I have to drive further for shopping or dining options. 

    Sophia: That makes sense. How about community and social life? 

    Mark: In the city, there's diversity, and you meet people from all _______________. There are events happening all the time. But in the town, it's more __________. You tend to know your neighbours, and there's a strong sense of community. 

    Sophia: Interesting. What about _____________, transportation and _______________? 

    Mark: In the city, public transportation is __________ and convenient. You can get around easily. However, in the town, it's more ____________ on personal vehicles. There are fewer public transport options, and walking or biking becomes more common. The infrastructure in cities is far larger and more advanced. There are ____________, stadiums, and shopping malls. In the town, we only have a few shops and most of the buildings are now larger than 5 stories.   

    Sophia: And what's your overall impression of both lifestyles? 

    Mark: Living in the city is vibrant and offers endless opportunities, but it can be ___________. The town, on the other hand, offers ___________ and a closer-knit community, but lacks the hustle and bustle of city life.

    Mark: Definitely. It's all about personal preference and what suits your lifestyle best.

    Intimate: Characterized by a close and personal connection or a private and familiar atmosphere.

    Abundant: Existing or available in large quantities; plentiful.

    Hectic: Full of busy activity, excitement, or confusion; fast-paced and chaotic.

    Tranquility: A state of calmness, peace, and quiet; free from disturbance or agitation.

    Hustle and Bustle: Refers to the busy and noisy activity, usually associated with crowded and lively environments such as cities or busy areas.

  • Step 1: Introduce the topic of living in a town or a city and ask what are the differences. Introduce words like culture, infrastructure, opportunities, community, etc. 

    Step 2: Have the students discuss the warm-up questions. Ask for some answers after they are done. 

    Step 3: Play the audio. Have your students listen and fill in the missing words in the script. 

    Step 4: Have the students complete the vocabulary worksheet before or after the listening. This will depend on teacher preferences.  

    Step 5: Let the students discuss the discussion questions and elicit answers from them after they are done. You should get them to use the vocabulary in their discussions.   ​
